What Does An Accountant Do?

There are a variety of career options, as every industry needs accountants. Graduates of Gateway’s Accounting degree program often work as an accountant, bookkeeper or assistant accountant in accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll or income tax. Learning By Doing

Each of Gateway’s Accounting classes give students the opportunity to learn skills by doing exactly what will be done on the job. Students learn through real-world scenarios and projects. Students gain skill in software employers want – QuickBooks, Excel, Word, H R Block tax software and PowerPoint. This is what makes Gateway’s Accounting graduates so employable!

The BIZ Squad provides students the opportunity to gain experience working on a project team that includes Accounting students and those from other business programs. Accounting internships provide hands-on accounting experience in the community. Gain experience while serving the community in Accounting – Serving the Public Interest or as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer.

Job Salary Outlook

Accountants, bookkeepers and auditing clerks compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial records complete. They perform any combination of routine calculating, posting, and verifying duties to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records. They may also check the accuracy of figures, calculations, and postings pertaining to business transactions recorded by other workers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks is expected to grow 14 percent through 2020. The median annual salary of bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks was $36,430 in 2015. Rates increase with greater experience and education. Students who go on to become certified in specific areas of accounting will see greater earning potential.

Industry Certification Licensing

Gateway Technical College Accounting program graduates are eligible to sit for several certification exams providing them with the potential for additional employment credentials. The National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers (NACPB) offers bookkeeper, payroll, and tax certifications tests. Additional certifications available to graduates include the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) Certified Bookkeeper ; QuickBooks Certified User ; and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification, Excel and Excel Expert. Income Tax Accounting students earn VITA certification as part of the course.

On-Demand Option

Gateway Technical College’s Online and On-Demand Accounting degree program allows students to customize their education. Take all online courses, or take a combination of on-campus and online courses.

All required accounting courses for the Associates degree are offered online and on-demand as well as on campus. Courses required for the Associates degree outside the accounting program are also offered as online courses, so the entire Associates degree can be completed online.

  • Start when you want – there are 36 weekly start dates per year for on-demand courses. After the course start date, students have 15 weeks to complete the course.
