Antonio Thompson, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of History

It’s one thing to talk about Civil War soldiers and the strategies they employed. It’s another to walk in the footsteps where these same soldiers fought and died.

“You gain a different understanding of things,” said Thompson, who recently took his class to the Fort Donelson National Battlefield. “When we discuss World War II, we can’t go to famous European sites, but we can visit an important battlefield in the Civil War that is right in our backyard.”

Jack Deibert, Ph.D.

Professor of Geology

Tracing the history of geologist Ferdinand Hayden means tracing the history of the American West. Through his book, “Tracks, Trails Thieves,” Diebert recounts Hayden’s 1871 travels in Wyoming and the dinosaur fossil and tracks he discovered.

“Other historians who wrote about him didn’t understand how much he really accomplished,” Deibert said. “What began as somewhere between a hobby and an obsession for me has turned out to be what I hope could be the definitive tale of his exhibition for the next 100 years.”
