Thread: U of Pretoria 1-year PhD Program

This flies in the face of standard PhD candidature, and really shocks me. How the hell can a GAAP institution promote and offer such a program? I note the PhD has a maximum of 4 years duration, which must be their part-time mode. But normal full time candidature is 3-4 years full time. How is it possible to produce a 100k+ thesis in a year, and provide a significant and original contribution to a body of knowledge?

From what I’ve read around here, it looks like in the South African model that coursework is handled at the Master’s level and that the dissertation is all that there is in the doctoral program. IOW, once you are accepted and register, you’re ABD at a South African university.

In that case, I can maybe see a dissertation being ready in a year — if one works exclusively and assiduously. But certainly not necessarily.

Yes, this is similar to the Australian, UK et al model – Masters by full research, or full coursework or a combination. But surely the Masters and PhD are technically both separate awards? I really cannot see how one can be expected to perform empirical, ‘ground breaking’ research in a year and write up a thesis which should be equivalent in academic rigour to a PhD thesis undertaken under a normal 3/4 year canditature. Also, given that the U of Pretoria PhD theses ‘should’ be externally examined, I would be very interested to see how these are compared to a standard model.

I will not consider south african model look like Australian, UK or NZ anyway. 1-year PhD can be show that:
1. south african standard lower that Australian, UK or NZ .
or 2. south african student clever than Australian, UK or NZ

Impossible to accomplish. A DLitt et Phil degree can take as long as seven years to complete. Even a full time student would require a minimum of three years to conduct the literature review and write the manuscript. Seems a bit far-fetched.

In the Unizul Faculty of Theology and Religion Studies the D.Th. done by research only unless deficiencies need to be made up, cannot be awarded before two years after the Master of Theology is completed. As I am mostly retired, I put quite a good amount of time in on the dissertation. I don’t see how it be done well. at least in my area, even working full time, in one year or even two. I am hoping to be done in three.

Nope, this sure isn’t consistent with my awareness of some other SA universities. But as to your question if South Africans are cleverer than Brits, Australians, or New Zealanders–

(some hon. members) Oh! Oh!

(other hon. members) Hear! Hear!

(one hon. member) Quack! Quack!

Ag shame, ek is totaal bosbefok. Don’t mind me.

In my experience in Education. I do not believe that any one race is more intelligent or superior than another. It’s just a matter of opportunities given in foundational years to the people of a particular country. Again Any race can have its superiorly intelligent people but it can also have the most lesser intelligent persons.
As to SA universities, what happens for a particular department in U of Pr. does not happen in the other SA univ nor even in other UofP departments like in the Dept of Theology (CLSeibel’s post).
(Just an opinion) So I think there’s no need to panic.

I never mean to talk about race anyway. Ethnic groups in SA compose of black 75.2%, white 13.6%, Colored 8.6%, Indian 2.6%.

I thought, why SA need only 6 year after high school to hold doctor’s degree because of SA Life expectancy at birth is only 46.56 years, while German system need so much year to hold doctor’s degree because of Life expectancy at birth of German is
78.42 years.

Does it make sence?
